Selecting an ERP Consultant: Key Criteria Checklist

Your ERP consultant must collaborate very closely with your team. An ERP consultant needs to understand the intricate processes of your business (or institution) to produce effective solutions. There should be concordance between the consultant and the team. You, your team, and the ERP consultant will work in close consultation for a long time so it is an imperative that they should have good coordination.

The ERP consultant should have a good understanding of the technical limitations of the ERP product. No ERP system can have all the solutions. At the same time, no institution will change its major processes to suit an ERP system. So, a compromise needs to be found about how much can the ERP system be customized and how much can the legacy systems adapt to the ERP system. Only a good consultant can strike the right balance.

The ERP consultant should have local knowledge. No business operates in isolation and every business needs to meet the compliances of the local and the federal government. So, the ERP consultant should have a good knowledge of the local laws and the legal structure, the tax regime, the environmental, and other compliances. Having a good knowledge in these matters would result in the creation of an efficient ERP system.

The ERP Consultant should also have a good understanding of the legacy systems of the organization. It is helpful to engage an ERP consultant who has domain knowledge of a business like yours. For example, if you are implementing an ERP system at an academic institution, it is good to have a consultant who has the experience of implementing academic ERP systems beforehand.

Lastly the consultant should be good in training your people on how to operate the ERP system once it has been implemented.

After spending almost two decades in setting up and scaling businesses from various segments, I acquired a diverse set of skills varying from business management, banking and finance, transcription services, and education and customer acquisition. I felt the strong need for a user-centric ERP, complete with relevant business functions and that's why we introduced our very own shikshaERP.
